Rugby Deutschland is the governing body for rugby union in Germany.
Rugby Deutschland: A Brief History
Rugby Deutschland governs rugby union in Germany, with roots tracing back to Heidelberg in 1872, home to the country’s oldest rugby club. Hanover followed in 1878, founding the first club dedicated solely to field sports. These cities remain rugby strongholds, claiming most national titles.
The German Rugby Association (DRV) was established in 1900, fostering competitions like the German Championship (since 1909) and international matches (since 1927). Clubs from Heidelberg and Hanover dominate, with TSV Victoria Linden (Hanover) leading in men’s titles and SC Neuenheim (Heidelberg) in women’s.
Rugby has expanded beyond these hubs, with thriving scenes in Frankfurt, Berlin, and Hamburg. Over 16,000 members across 137 clubs are part of the DRV (2020).
The German Rugby Sports Museum in Heidelberg, founded in 1997, preserves the sport’s history, featuring rare exhibits like the founding flag of 1900 and artifacts from Germany’s Olympic silver medal in 1900.
