Job Description

The Head Athletic Trainer will manage the day-to-day sports medicine operations for Rhode Island FC, a men’s pro soccer club playing in the USL Championship. In this capacity, the Head Athletic Trainer will provide injury prevention strategies, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation for Players’ medical problems and act as the liaison to the Orthopedics Rhode Island and the Team Orthopedic Physician.

This position is for a year-round employee, the Head Athletic Trainer will attend all physicals, training, scrimmages, treatment sessions, as well as all home and away games.  The projected start date is January 1, 2025.

Licenses or Certifications

  • National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) Certification
  • State or Province License in the state/province in which the Club calls home, if required by the state/province
  • BLS or CPR certification for Health Care Provider
  • Maintain professional liability insurance

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

 Clinical:

  • Manages the healthcare of Players including, but not limited to first aid/emergency care and on-site injury evaluation.
  • Application of appropriate modalities, development of rehabilitation and prevention programs, as well as conducting rehabilitation and making medical referrals.
  • Compliance with OSHA standards regarding blood borne pathogens.
  • Keep athletic training room and clinic area safe, clean, and organized.
  • Maintain a complete and up to date roster of Player health and participation records in electronic medical record system as required.
  • Accurate documentation for injuries including first report, physician diagnosis, player assessments and treatments, and return to play status.
  • Initiate insurance/worker’s compensation claims for Players.
  • Maintain and organize pharmaceutical inventory and records.
  • Organize physical examinations as required by the League and Club regulations.
  • Collaborate with Strength and Conditioning/Performance on data collected for athlete health and safety measures.
  • Compliance with all League medical policies and protocols.
  • Consult with Players regarding dietary needs, nutritional supplements, and League/FIFA banned substances.
  • Communicating daily with technical staff and being proactive with their approach to player care.
  • Maintains proper lines of communication to ensure athletes are getting optimal care within the team.
  • Works closely with physical therapists and area physicians to treat Players.
  • Collaborate with the Team Physician to facilitate expeditious medical care onsite as well as office visits.

Administrative:

  • Order and maintain inventory supplies and clinical equipment.
  • Keep athletic training room and clinic area safe, clean, and organized.
  • Initiate insurance/worker’s compensation claims for Players.
  • Compile reports as required by the Head Coach.
  • Supervise athletic training Interns and volunteers.
  • Demonstrate interpersonal skills required to work effectively with Players, coaches, other Club personnel and League staff.
  • Manage all medical data streams (e.g., physiological, injury prevention).
  • Develop and manage Emergency Action Plans
  • Seeks outreach opportunities and participates in events to promote the company.
  • Work with sponsorship and marketing departments in the fulfillment of partner contracts, related to the medical aspects of the club.
  • Attend all activities/meetings/programs as required by the League.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required by the Club.
  • Preferred Proficiency in Microsoft applications and knowledge of current technologies

Knowledge:

Travel:

  • Must be willing to travel for business – weekend work and travel is necessary. 

Required Education and Experience:

  • Minimum four (4) year college/university bachelor’s degree or master’s degree or higher in related healthcare field
  • Minimum four (4) years certified athletic trainer/therapist experience.
  • Experience with elite level athletes
  • Experience working in a high tempo, high stress environment.
  • Professional soccer experience preferred.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish is preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift patients using biomedical techniques frequently throughout the course of a workday/shift; must be capable of easily lifting fifty (50) pounds of weight alone.
  • Ability to walk, bend, stand, and reach constantly during a workday/shift. Ability to participate in sustained activities for many hours in duration in accordance with state labor laws.
  • Requires normal (corrected) vision and hearing.
