Job Description

The Physical Therapist is responsible for overseeing the injury management and rehabilitation of players at the club, primarily working with the first team, but being a point of contact and consultation for the academy. The injury management approach will be in line with departmental strategy and philosophy, aligning to the football and club philosophy, and in consultation with the Director of Human Performance.

Under consultation with the CMO the physical therapist’s key responsibilities include implementing a data informed strategy within the integrated planning and implementation of rehabilitation plans for players under the care of the Human Performance Team, monitoring and reporting progress of individuals within rehabilitation.

Working closely with the Director of Human Performance and performance team to implement a performance rehabilitation approach, to return players safely and as quickly as possible.

Implementing strategies within care plans, that mitigate re-injury. Working closely within the performance team to optimize injury reduction strategies. Keep accurate and up to date medical notes regarding the injury management of players within the MLS electronic medical record and internal systems.

Location:Primarily: Inova Performance Facility, Leesburg, VA

Match Days: Audi Field, Washington, DC

Compensation: $90,000 – $110,000/Year

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs physical therapy services for the club’s players under the guide of the Director of Performance, making informed decisions in consultation with the Director of Performance and Chief Medical Officer (CMO)
  • Provide up-to-date physical therapy evaluation, plan of care, progress notes, and discharge notes maintained in the League electronic medical record (EMR)
  • Maintain a complete and up-to-date physical therapy record in the League EMR
  • Maintain Physical Therapy supplies and clinical equipment
  • Comply with all MLS medical policies and protocols
  • Comply with OSHA standards with regard to blood borne pathogens
  • Participate as part of the Club’s Medical Staff as required by the Director of Performance and CMO
  • Implement a data informed strategy within the integrated planning and implementation of rehabilitation plans for players under the care of the Human Performance Team, monitoring and reporting progress of individuals within rehabilitation
  • Working closely with the Director of Human Performance and performance team to implement a performance rehabilitation approach, to return players safely and as quickly as possible
  • Implementing strategies within care plans, that mitigate re-injury
  • Working closely within the performance team to optimize injury reduction strategies
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required

Essential Criteria:

  • Four (4) year bachelor’s degree
  • Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree (DPT) Licenses or Certifications
  • Passed National Physical Therapy Exam
  • Possess personal professional liability insurance
  • Active, credentialed and licensed in the state(s)/province(s) where the Club has home matches or trains
  • CPR certification for Health Care Provider
  • Minimum three years of experience with elite athletes, preferably including soccer player. Experience with elite athletes includes direct involvement in collegiate, professional, Olympic, tactical (e.g., Special Forces, Service Academies), performance (e.g., Cirque du Soleil, Performing Arts) or equivalent professions.
  • Must be available to travel with the team during pre-season.

Desirable Skills:

  • Proficiency with AMS platforms
  • Ability to speak Spanish is preferred but not required.
  • CSCS, and/or PES, Certified Performance Sport Specialist (CPSS)
  • Preferred APTA OCS, SCS or NATABOC Certified Athletic Trainers/Therapists
