Job Description

The Opportunity

British Rowing and the UK Sports Institute have an exciting opportunity as a full-time Lead Strength and Conditioning Coach. In addition to the leadership and mentoring component, you will manage the Para (0.5 FTE) and Beach Sprints strength programmes working at the GB Rowing Team (GBRT) National Training Centre (NTC) in Caversham, Reading.
We are seeking a creative practitioner with experience working with unusual movement patterns to be part of a tight team. Programmes will need to be highly individualised and there will be a need to provide remote support when athletes are travelling. This role will require manual handling of athletes so you should be physically capable of lifting someone who is 90kg. Beach Sprints is a new Olympic sport and will require different programmes to meet the needs of the event.
You will improve the rowing performance through the development, implementation, and evaluation of the S&C programmes that reflect scientific principles as they relate to adaptation, periodisation, peaking, tapering, and injury rehabilitation. This will be done for the entire GBRT S&C programme with the enhancement of skill level for all practitioners.
The GBRT has a phenomenal track record of performance at the highest levels of Olympic sport and is seeking an exceptional Strength and Conditioning Coach to form part of the core daily delivery team towards the LA 2028 and Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games.

Location:

British Rowing functions out of a bespoke NTC in Caversham (near Reading) where athletes can train both on the water and on land whilst receiving World Class Coaching and Support Services. Some of the gym sessions will also be conducted at the UKSI High-Performance Centre at the Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre (near Marlow). Due to the nature of the role, delivery will be in person to meet the needs of the sport.

Role requirements:

A typical week would be Monday to Saturday with half days on Wednesday and Saturday. You will manage the other three S&C practitioners, ensure that the profiling is aligned and meets the needs of the sport, and use world leading practices. We would expect that some of your time is spent understanding the technical model of the sport which would require you to observe on-water training sessions.

GBRT Vision:

A world leading Olympic and Paralympic nation which inspires and creates opportunities for anyone capable of delivering or supporting success to realise their dreams regardless of background.

GBRT Mission:

To deliver a programme which consistently produces gold medal success and creates the environment where athletes and staff thrive.

British Rowing takes pride in the tradition of success that it has created through the development and performances of athletes on the world stage.

A snapshot of the role

This is an exciting opportunity to work within one of Great Britain’s most successful sporting teams. Reporting to the Head Coaches (Men, Women, Para, Beach Sprints, and Development) you will have the opportunity to support the development of an integrated and periodised performance plan that meets the needs of World Class Programme rowers.
For you to succeed you will bring enthusiasm, creativity and energy to the role and have a genuine desire to help athletes achieve their performance aspirations.
We are looking for an experienced and suitably qualified practitioner who can work collaboratively in a demanding performance environment within an interdisciplinary support team. It is important to be accessible, approachable, and visible in this role.
Previous experience within rowing is not essential but a passion to learn more about the sport is. It is expected that you develop a basic understanding of the Para rowing classification processes and will work closely with the GBRT health team.

What makes joining British Rowing and the UKSI compelling?

This is your opportunity to work within one of Great Britain’s most successful sporting teams by shaping the future of the rowers looking to succeed at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. Not only will you be well supported within the GBRT NTC, but you will have technical leadership from UKSI S&C staff for your continued professional development.
The GBRT Sports Science and Medicine Team (SSSM) align our work to the GBRT “What it Takes to Win” model that has a holistic approach to developing people. The foundations lie in three main strands: Physical, Technical, and Psychological. There are interdisciplinary projects underpinning these in the following five key areas: Adapting, Available, Efficient, Thriving, and Developing.
If you are looking for a job that brings new challenges daily and you feel you can bring the expertise and passion that we require to help us shape our future, we very much look forward to hearing from you.

At the UKSI we aspire to have a workforce that is diverse and representative of all sections of society, not only by characteristic but by thought and perspective.  We believe a diverse workforce enables growth and creates a sustainably inclusive workspace for all employees.
If there is something we can do to help make the recruitment process or the job more accessible, let us know!
