The Role and What You’ll Do:
The UFC Performance Institute (UFCPI) is the world’s first Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) multi-disciplinary research, innovation, and training center, and is globally recognized for the performance infrastructures it provides to UFC and UFC Academy athletes. With world-class facilities in Las Vegas, Shanghai, and Mexico City, the mission of the UFCPI is to promote performance-enhancement through the delivery of world-class coaching, science, and medical services to the world’s best MMA and combat athletes. The core values of the UFCPI are aligned to maximizing the health and wellbeing of UFC athletes and to support fighters and coaches in optimizing their training, preparation, and ultimately performances in the octagon.
The successful candidate for this role will join a world-class interdisciplinary team of service providers with a proven track record of delivering world-leading support services to MMA and other professional athletes. The role will be integral in supporting the delivery of core services to UFC Academy athletes in Mexico and throughout Latin America, as well as wider business-related initiatives on a global scale. Aligned with the overall strategy of the UFC and the UFCPI Mexico City, the Sports Medicine Coordinator will work with the incumbent Sports Medicine Manager and Coordinator to provide elite level health care services to athletes within the UFC PI, including (but not limited to) the UFC Academy, UFC rostered athletes, national governing bodies for sport, and other professional athletes as required. Additionally, this role will collaborate with UFC PI staff to develop best in class injury prevention, rehabilitation interventions, and return to play protocols for MMA athletes.
- Work with the Sports Medicine Manager and Sports Medicine Coordinator to provide elite level sports physical therapy services, including evaluations, program planning, acute injury care, and treatments that include manual therapy, myofascial, modality and other therapeutic exercise interventions.
- Integrate sports medicine services into a multi-disciplinary model of care that includes technical coaching, strength and conditioning, performance nutrition, sports psychology, and sport science.
- Participate in establishing physical therapy care guidelines and return to play protocols.
- Participate and assist in the development of support systems to aid in athlete assessment, data collection, and data management.
- Develop third-party consultant relationships and form strategic partnerships with industry leaders in physical therapy and sports medicine.
- Cultivate relationships with athletes and coaches to distribute evidence-based relevant information.
- Participate in on-going training with athletes, coaches, and UFC PI staff members to ensure continued professional development and adherence to professional codes of conduct.
- Strive to develop novel and innovative methodologies that serve to create world-leading working practices in the field of MMA-specific physical therapy, injury prevention and rehabilitation.
- Perform other tasks, projects, and responsibilities as requested by the Sports Medicine Director and Manager to establish a world-leading performance service.
- Deliver physical therapy and sports medicine services to third party organizations that utilize the UFCPI services, including professional sport teams, the national governing bodies for sport, and other sporting organizations as required.
- Attend national and regional meetings and workshops, training courses and visiting national and regional sites on occasion and as appropriate.
- Contribute to the development and delivery of UFCPI educational, certification, and learning materials.
- Within the rules of professional confidentiality, liaise with athletes, primary care managers, coaches, and other support staff as appropriate.
- Contribute to additional tasks, projects, and responsibilities relating to the success and ongoing development of the UFCPI Mexico and the global UFCPI infrastructure.
- Assist with practice coverage support and injury management during technical training.
- Travels and establishes a sports medicine clinic in event host hotel and delivers medical care to UFC athletes in the week preceding a fight event.
- Works together with the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and commission physicians to oversee the treatment of injuries following fight events.
- Oversees the medical holding room during events to guarantee the health and safety of athletes.
You Have These:
- Degree in Physiotherapy, Physical Therapy, Athletic Training, or ACBSP Chiropractor certification.
- Experience working with professional, high level collegiate/amateur or tactical athletes in an integrated performance environment preferred.
- Credentials focused on sport performance and sport rehab such as SCS, OCS, CSCS, CCSP, DACBSP, PES, CES are highly preferred.
- Certifications in manual therapy and soft tissue/myofascial techniques are highly preferred.
- Current physical therapy licensure in good standing within Mexico preferred or demonstrate ability to obtain licensure required.
- Awareness and proven ability to effectively collaborate with strength & conditioning staff on both prevention, rehabilitation and return to performance efforts.
- Professional experience in contact sports required, combat sports preferred.
- Understanding of the demands of the MMA sport (i.e. physical, physiology, gender-specific, weight categories, weight management, travel requirements, etc.).
- Understanding of existing evidence-based research, and the implementation of new research areas to enhance the sport, athletes, and coaches.
- Must have good communication skills. Bilingual Spanish and English speakers are preferred.
