Job Description

The Hockey Coach is a key member of a forward-thinking and ambitious Sports Department. The successful applicant will support the School’s vision to gain national recognition and compete at the highest levels.

Start Date – 27 August 2026

The hours below indicate the typical schedule, although they can be adjusted depending on the successful candidate’s availability:

Monday: 2.30pm – 5.30pm
Tuesday: 2.30pm – 4.30pm
Wednesday: 2.30pm – 5.30pm
Thursday: 3.30pm – 5.00pm
Friday: 3.30pm – 5.00pm
Saturday: Fixtures (to be confirmed)

Please note that final working hours will be agreed in line with the candidate’s availability.

Hockey Coach – Job Description

General Responsibilities & Expectations

  • Support the aims and objectives of the Mill Hill Education Group
  • Comply with the Mill Hill School Foundation Health and Safety Policy
  • Promote the general progress, wellbeing, and safety of all pupils you coach
  • Maintain good order and discipline among pupils during coaching sessions, fixtures, training camps, and off-site activities
  • Be an outstanding ambassador for Mill Hill Sport, modelling the values of the Games programme: Fit for Life and Fit for Performance
  • Contribute to a professional, collaborative, and high-performing coaching culture
  • Work positively within a framework of professional development, feedback, and training
  • Attend key whole-school events such as Open Mornings, sports tournaments, and Foundation Day

Core Hockey Responsibilities

  • Plan, prepare, and deliver high-quality Hockey coaching sessions within timetabled Games lessons and in the extra-curricular programme for pupils aged 13–18
  • Run or assist in running a school Hockey squad
  • Lead training sessions and fixtures (including officiating where required) during the pupils’ midweek and weekend programmes.
  • Assist the Head of Hockey in delivering a high-level pre-season training programme for the Autumn term & Spring term
  • Keep up to date with the latest trends in hockey coaching, athlete development, and training methodology, incorporating these into Mill Hill’s hockey strategy
  • Support the Head of Hockey in providing video and performance analysis for teams and individual players
  • Work with the Head of Hockey to deliver a coach education programme for hockey coaches across the Foundation
  • Promote Mill Hill Hockey across London and the surrounding area, raising the profile of the programme
  • Help increase the number and quality of talented hockey players applying for 11+, 13+, and 16+ sports scholarships

Player Development & Performance

  • Oversee team and squad selection, tracking player progression and maintaining accurate records
  • Contribute to the development of Scholars through collaboration with the Performance Team (S&C, nutrition, psychology, sports therapy)
  • Assist with early morning, lunchtime, or after-school hockey and performance sessions where required
  • Support the holistic development of players through guidance on training habits, recovery, wellbeing, and performance behaviours
  • Contribute to educational workshops for hockey athletes on topics such as mindset, nutrition, preparation, and performance expectations

Equipment & Administration

  • Assist the Head of Hockey in maintaining, organising, and auditing all hockey equipment
  • Participate in administrative and organisational tasks linked to coaching, fixtures, tournaments, and programme delivery
  • Report concerns regarding incidents, fire, loss, theft, damage, or irregularities
  • Attend and contribute to staff meetings related to hockey and wider sport as required

Safeguarding & Conduct

  • Promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young people at all times
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with pupils
  • Ensure safe and effective management of all coaching sessions, adhering to school safeguarding and risk-assessment protocols

Additional Responsibilities

  • Carry out all duties reasonably requested by the Head of Hockey, Director of Sport, or Head of Mill Hill School
  • Maintain a flexible approach to working hours in line with a busy sporting calendar

Person Specification

Essential Qualities

  • Awareness of safeguarding and child protection issues, with knowledge of safeguarding principles and procedures
  • High professional and personal standards
  • A genuine love of coaching hockey and inspiring pupils through the sport
  • A track record of developing young players in performance and participation environments
  • Ambition to contribute positively to a growing and evolving hockey programme
  • Previous experience teaching or coaching hockey, supported by appropriate hockey or sport-related coaching qualifications
  • Ability to deliver an appropriate hockey programme for pupils of all abilities, balancing technical development, tactical understanding, competitive match play, and game-based learning
  • Understanding of the needs of young athletes within a developmental performance pathway
  • Ability to plan purposeful sessions that align with schemes of work and the wider Games programme ethos of Fit for Life and Fit for Performance
  • Strong knowledge of current trends, best practice, and innovative techniques in hockey coaching and player development
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
  • Flexibility and availability for mid-week and weekend training sessions, fixtures, and tournaments
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a coaching team and within a multidisciplinary performance environment

Desirable Qualities

  • Previous experience coaching or teaching within a school environment
  • Strong understanding of young people, their educational needs, and their developmental stages
  • Availability to attend national or international hockey tours and events
  • Recognised coaching qualification or working towards this
  • Ability to drive a minibus (D1 licence)
  • First Aid qualification
  • Ability to officiate competitive hockey fixtures and tournaments
  • Experience working with players on aspirational or performance pathway programmes
  • Experience using video analysis, digital tools, or performance-tracking technology
